Dr. Margaret Jayich is a breast surgical oncologist who was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. She graduated from Service High School and attended the University of Puget Sound, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in German and International Affairs. After college, she lived in Seattle, where she spent time working in the nonprofit sector and exploring an interest in architecture before ultimately deciding to pursue a career in medicine.
Dr. Jayich earned her medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed her general surgery residency at Saint Louis University. She then completed a Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Southern California, one of the country’s longest-established Society of Surgical Oncology-accredited fellowship programs. Her fellowship provided a particularly broad experience, as she trained at three very different hospitals. At Keck Hospital of USC, she cared for medically complex patients in an academic setting incorporating the latest advances in breast care and research. At Los Angeles County Hospital (now Los Angeles General Medical Center), she cared for an underserved population, including many patients with advanced breast cancer, and gained experience with high-volume, rare, and unusual presentations of breast disease. At Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, she trained under Dr. Melvin Silverstein, a pioneer in oncoplastic breast surgery in the United States. This specialized approach combines the principles of cancer surgery with plastic surgery techniques, allowing breast cancer to be treated while preserving or improving the shape and appearance of the breast.
Dr. Jayich cares for patients with benign and malignant breast disease, as well as those at high risk for developing breast cancer. She is passionate about achieving both excellent oncologic and aesthetic outcomes. She believes that breast disease is not a one-size-fits-all experience and that each patient’s goals, circumstances, and preferences should be central to the treatment process. She strives to work collaboratively with her patients to develop an individualized treatment plan that reflects both the best available medical care and what matters most to each person.
After completing her training and spending years outside Alaska, Dr. Jayich returned home to be closer to her parents and to serve the community where she grew up. She is grateful for the opportunity to bring her specialized training in breast surgical oncology and oncoplastic surgery back to Alaska.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Jayich enjoys time with family and friends, exploring Alaska’s great outdoors, and life with her dog, Lotte. Her other interests include gardening, cooking, and the arts.
